Time To Redesign Your Website
Time To Redesign Your Website Designing your first website is a stressful undertaking. It requires you to dig deep into your business in order to write the copy for your site. You need to work with a designer and go through the process of creating a site that looks unique and works well. Plus you'll end up investing a lot of time, energy and money. And finally, after all that, you're finished and it's time for the site to go live. What a relief! Many business owners go through this same process. By the time the process is finished, many entrepreneurs are very glad that it's over - and don't want to do it again anytime soon. Unfortunately, websites don't last forever. Even if you plan your site to work for the current vision for your business, you can't accurately account for the entire future of your business. Eventually you'll have to make some changes to your website. Some of these changes can be accomplished with simple maintenance, and by making updates to your site. But there's only so far that patching and revising your current site can go. If your site is particularly outdated, or if it's not working well for you, it's probably time to consider a full-scale site redesign. Some signs that it's time to redesign your site include: Your Business Has Changed or Grown If your business is no longer the same as it was when you designed your site, chances are that you should redesign your website to reflect that. If you've only had a few small changes, you might be able to just update your current website. But, if you've changed your business direction, decided to provide new products or services, or if your company has grown significantly, it will pay off to redesign your site. Reconsider how the changes to your business should be reflected or addressed in the structure, design and strategy behind your website. Your Site Looks Like It Was Designed in 1995 Some signs of an outdated web site include: chunky, slow-loading graphics, old-style "framed" coding, where the site is divided up into panes that load separately, little animated cartoon clip-art throughout the site, and text created as images instead of in HTML. Having any of these on your site could reflect poorly on your business, making you look 'behind the times'. It can also make you look like you don't care enough about your business or about technological advances to keep abreast of them. Keeping your company's website looking modern will improve its credibility. The Information on Your Site Isn't User-Friendly If you cringe when you read your site text, or if you regularly get questíons on your site text from visitors, re-structuring your copy or rewriting it can help to fix these problems. If you've been adding to your site over time and the navigation has become unwieldy or confusing, restructuring your navigation could be another pressing reason to redesign your site. You want visitors to be able to easily find their way around your site and to be able to access all the information you have within a few clicks. Laying out your site to make that possible can make your visitor's experience on your site a lot easier. You Apologize for the Site When Referencing It or Handing Out Your Business Cards Your site should be a source of pride. It should provide your clients and prospects an easy way to get a lot of information about your business. And, if you have to apologize for out-of-date information, broken images, poor design, difficult navigation or anything else on your site, it makes you look unprepared and unprofessional. Make sure your site is in top shape and looks impressive, so your clients believe your business is in good shape too. You're Not Getting Good Results in the Search Engines Poor rankings in the Search Engines can be a result of not optimizing your site well. Poor search engine ranking can also be a result of bad design choices or coding on your site. Make sure that your site isn't designed using frames and that the text is coded in HTML. Flash sites are also more difficult to optimize for Search Engines. It's Not Bringing in inquiries and Helping You to Make Sales If your site was designed long ago, then there's a good chance that it was designed as "brochureware". This means that the site was designed just to act as an online brochure. This was very common a few years ago, when websites were new. But recently businesses have realized that a website can do a lot more than just impersonate your brochure - it can help you close sales, bring in new prospects and make your business easier to run. To bring in more inquiries and make more sales include the following when you redesign your site: Calls to action to encourage your visitors to take specific actions - like purchasing something, contacting you, or signing up for a newsletter. Forms, scripts, or programs to make your business easier - like contact forms, project estimating tools, and an autoresponder email series that can help you keep in touch with your clients and prospects. Including a shopping cart or Paypal buttons on your site can also help you to make more sales without any additional work. Downloadable information packets, articles, questionnaires and white papers can answer a prospect's questíons about your products or services and help them to move closer to buying. And, if you require the prospect to enter their email address or other contact information, it can help you to grow your prospect líst as well. These are just a few of the functions that your site can perform for your business. To get ideas for other ways that your site can help you improve your business, look at the other sites that you visit and note the functions they perform. Your Site is Costing You a Fortune to Update If you're racking up huge bills because of changes and still have a lot to go, it might be time to consider a whole site redesign. Make a líst of everything that you want to do on your site and consult a web designer about redesigning your site with those changes in mind. Often, if you have extensive changes to make to your site, it can be less expensive to just start over. If your site is designed in Flash or coded in such a way that you can't maintain it yourself, redesigning and re-coding your site could allow you to do so. Having the ability to make changes and update your own text will let you make revisions quickly, at no expense. And you can play with your site and make revisions to see what will work best for your business and clients. If your site has any of the problems mentioned here, it's time to redesign. The steps needed to update and revise will differ depending on the problems and issues that your site has - you may not have to start from scratch. But, do make sure that you address all of the problems that your site has so that you won't have to redesign again any time soon. SEO, Site Marketing and Web Analytics: Digital Dream Team
Does your business have an active digital pulse? Or is it in need of a pacemaker? Important questions. Here is another ... how do your site visitors and potential customers view your site? A Website presence has become standard operating procedure for any business seeking to reach a wider audience, enhance marketing and advertising efforts, stretch marketing budgets, make strategic affiliations, or network and interact on a national or global scale. Once your business site has been designed, built and set in motion, the fun begins. And the name of this game is SEO (Search Engine Optimization). SEO is a vital part of Website marketing. Think of it as the foundation on which to build your promotion and advertising campaigns. Without effective SEO, your site will be buried in the obscurity of distant search engine listings. With a good SEO foundation and practices, your site will gain important rank position in the big search engines and your customers, new and old, will find you with minimal searching. As good as rank position may sound, keep in mind that the search industry is always evolving, and listings/rankings have to be watched and worked regularly. Online marketing and SEO experts all agree that submitting a site to search engines for listing is only the beginning. Once the Meta data has been completed (the development and placement of keywords in the HTML Meta tags on your site page files), you can begin a regular marketing plan. Part of this plan should include staying aware of any changes that the major search players are going through. A solid marketing plan will be different things to different people. There are low cost Web-only strategies that utilize press releases, link or banner exchanges, affiliate programs and providing free content, such as e-books or industry information. These can take a little longer to get results, so where money is saved, time involvement becomes crucial. For faster results, there are pay-per-click programs and various online paid advertising. And for those businesses that seek local and offline clientele, there are magazine, newspaper, radio and TV ads. But whatever the methods chosen, all marketing comes back to your Website - or Blog. The ideal scenario allows you to keep close and accurate track of all your efforts, know the success or failure of campaigns, and learn user response through the activity on your Website. Too many businesses underutilize their Websites, wasting a highly valuable tool.
Basically there are two avenues of marketing, and they should both lead back to your Website -- site-specific online advertising, and outside advertising that brings people to your site. Therefore, successful marketing requires that you really know your site visitors. What do your potential customers see when they visit your Website? What invites them to move through your site? What compels them to make a purchase, or sign up for the newsletter? To be successful with your marketing, you MUST know your audience. It really is not as difficult as it sounds. With the growing awareness of Web analytics, business owners are finding that their site traffic data can yield valuable and detailed data on their visitors' habits, usage... and their response to advertising. Web analytics reports, until very recently, were generated from a cumbersome, time-consuming log-based system that was very difficult to understand by anyone who was not tech-savvy. Many sites still labor through this method for their data reports. However, this is no longer necessary. Today's analytics and site tracking services are striving to be more useful and available. As with anything on the Internet, it either evolves or disappears. Web analytics have become recognized as a critical business component and, as a result, we are seeing the evolution of a new age heading toward a warmer, more sociable and approachable Web analytics industry. An energetic young company is leading this next generation of "friendlier" Website analysis services. VisiStat (www.visistat.com) is the first to make analytics reports speak directly to the site and business owner, and online marketer, in a language that is easily understood and used. This is the type of reporting that allows maximum feedback for marketing and advertising campaigns. With real-time data, any site owner can gain immediate, time critical data, such as seeing what results today's pay-per-click keywords received. Graphical, easy to read reports that relate what search engines were used, top keywords, site page popularity, what site pages hold visitors and how long pages are viewed, among other vital details, provide a wealth of information for getting the most return from your marketing efforts. Today, owning a business means you must have an online presence. It is a valuable tool, too often overlooked. With some good, solid SEO, you have a firm marketing foundation for your business; a global calling card. With an aggressive marketing and advertising strategy, you will have a tool to enhance your company's bottom line. And with this next generation of analytics, you have all the power you need to turn your Website into a one-stop marketing center, where you can keep your virtual fingers on the vivid pulse of your business ad campaigns, your visitors, your customers and your success. Starting A Website With Zero Cost
Starting A Website With Zero Cost Have you ever thought of owning a website? Is it out of interest/hobby or is it for the purpose of earning money? Either way motivates a person to start a website. For me, i started with the purpose of earning money and as time goes on, starting website become a hobby of mine. Actually, its very easy to start a website. So how do you go about starting the website? We will go through all the necessary steps in this article. Starting a website required some basic knowledge of html programming. If you already know html programming, thats good! If you do not know what is html about or do not know html programming, i recommend you to go to www.w3schools.com to learn I learn my html from there though. So i assume that you already know html programming in this article. If you want your website interacts with your internet visitors, it is important or it is a must to implement web scripting programming such as php, asp, asp.net in it. So what can those programming languages do? For example, making a contact form using php, making a forum using php, etc. You may also need to know some photoshop skills or css for designing your website. Photoshop skills for creating your layout or logo. If you have the budget, you can hire some professionals to do the designing part for you. Here, I assume that you are starting your website from scratch with $0 capital. So, it is best to spend a few months learning those skills before starting out. Having all the skills needed for starting a website. The next crucial thing is to write or draw out a website plan. This website plan acts as a "Business Plan". Many of the webmasters when developing their website missed out this step, and that makes a difference between a good and a bad website. In this plan, you should brainstorm about what your website is about, the name of your website, what are the targeted audience, what are your budgets, what make your website different from competitors, what are the main pages in your website and many more. By listing out all the minor or majors factors, you can get your aims, and purpose clear. So the next part is to start developing your website. Lets assume that you are making a simple website without any major programming. First, make your layout template in photoshop. You can download it from www.adobe.com. Secondly, code your layout and add your website content in notepad or dreamweaver. I would recommend using dreamweaver as its easy to use. When coding/developing your website, that are a few points that you need to take note of. Make sure that all your hyperlinks works, use text that are visible, use of appropriate meta tags. After you get your website files ready, its time to launch your website online. In your website plan discussed earlier on, you have already got your name brainstormed, so lets get your domain name. As said, I assume you have $0 capital, you may want to visit www.namepros.com and registered as a member there. In this namepros forum, you can earn namebucks for making quality posts or doing web services for members. Those namebucks that you have earn have real money value and can be use to register for your domain. I get my first domain there by participating in a logo contest in namepros. So after a few days or weeks in namepros, you should have enough namebucks for a domain name, so what are you waiting for? You are a step further. Next comes another difficult problem, that is finding the appropriate hosting company to host your website. There are severals ways of doing so, you can use your namebucks earn in replace for web hosting services, you can email hosting companies asking them to sponsor you, or you can find those free hosts service providers online . Using either way can get your website online. And finally, you start your first website. At this point of time, you have just realised that you having only started your first step in starting a website and there are many more things for you to learn. Etc, maintaining a website, marketing your website, advertising your website, etc. Hope that this article that i written can improve your understanding in starting a website online. Here are some programs that i recommended to download/join, there are a great help to me in developing website. Manage Your Website Easily with Content Management System
Manage Your Website Easily with Content Management System One main advantage of using CMS is one will be able to manage the contents of ones websites without having to deal with complicated technical tasks. Imagine that you are a very talented writer but you can't show your writings online just because you don't have any idea how to write webpages that consist of HTML tags. With CMS, a writer only needs to type her works in an editor as if she does it with a word processor. Then the CMS itself that will show her works online. It is a great time saver for a webmaster to create and maintain her website. The installation process is also very easy since many web hosting services have offered special features such as Fantastico where a user can install a CMS with just a few clicks of mouse. The process is done automatically. Basically, a web content management system consists of two main parts, a front-end and a back-end. The back-end is a section where you can do many administrative tasks such as inserting and editing articles, giving privileges to some people, managing the look and feel of your website, and so on. The front-end refers to what visitors see. It is the face of your website. In choosing a CMS, you should know what is the main purpose of using it. There are CMSs which are intended to build portals. Other systems are mainly used to build photo gallery, forum, personal or even corporate websites. Then you need to know what kind of features they have. For example, Drupal, an open source CMS, provides a feature where you can gather fresh contents from other sites by adding the sites' feeds. You can even filter any items so that you only show the items that contain a specific keyword. Usually, a CMS also offers additional modules that will enable you to use additional features without having to put your efforts in programming. Just download the module you need and install it in your hosting server. Don't forget also to know your own desires and abillities in modifying a CMS. For instance, Mambo should be sufficient for you who don't want to deal with some PHP coding. Mambo has already provided many modules to accomplish specific tasks. It also offers ready-to-use templates you can choose. On the other hand Typo3 is the right choice for people who need a very robust and flexible system. It is necessary to know that there are so many commercial and free content management system available. Vignette and FatWire are the example of two commercial systems while PostNuke, Drupal and Mambo.are free to use. And, of course there are other things you should consider for finding the right CMS. So please do a good and thorough analysis before deciding which system to use. Choosing the right Content Management System from the beginning is very important. Make sure it would best fit your needs. Real Estate SEO: 7 Ways to Boost Your Website's Visibility
Real Estate SEO: 7 Ways to Boost Your Website's Visibility This article pertains to real estate search engine optimization (SEO). In this article's usage, real estate SEO is the act of improving a real estate agent's website for better search engine visibility. 1. Choose the right phrases. Don't guess what phrases people are using, research them. Use a tool like WordTracker (www.wordtracker.com) to find out how your prospects are using the search engines. Make a list of 10 to 20 phrases relevant to your services, and focus your SEO strategy on those phrases. 2. Add 10 pages of content to your website. A blog is a great way to add content to your site on a regular basis. Blogs make web publishing incredibly simple - you just fill in the content areas and click the "Publish" button. Just be sure to publish the blog to your web domain, not the domain of the blog host. For instance, you would want you blog located at www.yourwebsite.com/blog rather than www.blogspot.com/myblog. If your blog is hosted under the blog host's domain, it will not contribute to the search engine visibility of your website. It may generate it's own search ranking over time, but it won't add to the cumulative ranking of your main website. 3. Make your website worth linking to. The key to getting a lot of inbound links is to make your site worth linking to. If your website only talks about you, few people will link to it. But if you turn your website into a resource of helpful information, you make it much easier to gain links. So why not build a resource section within your website? Or better yet, build an entire website dedicated to your local real estate scene. Build a comprehensive, helpful website with loads of information, and other webmasters will be more inclined to link to it. 4. Publish press releases online. 5. Publish articles online. You would then submit the article through distribution websites like EzineArticles.com. If it's well-written, you article could end up on dozens or hundreds of real estate-related websites. And again, each article would link back to your website thus increasing your "link popularity." 6. Add your site to directories. Most quality directories charge a review fee, but it's usually worth the price because of the additional trust your website will earn. Search engines view inbound links from directories as authoritative votes of confidence in your site. 7. Be patient and persistent. I recommend creating an SEO schedule. I have one, and if you're serious about search engine visibility, you should have one too. Schedule one task per day, two hours per weekend, or whatever you can squeeze in. The key is to do at least one thing for your SEO program each week, or more if you can find the time. Real estate search engine optimization is not a sprint -- it's a marathon. Search engine success takes time, but it more than pays off in the long run. Can you imagine being found on the first page of all major search engines for one or more of your key phrases? That's your end goal, and it's a goal well worth the effort! Brandon Cornett is the author of the "Agent's Guide to Search Engine Visibility," available in E-book format for instant download. SEO Keyword Placement Strategies
SEO Keyword Placement Strategies Have you ever questioned why some highly relevant websites show very poor ranking in the search results? The answer might as well lie in bad keyword placement decisions. See, there are many places on your website where you can place your keywords - and they differ in the effectiveness with which they help you achieve higher ranking positions. The major keyword placement locations usually are: 1. Title Tag Search engines usually give the most weight to the page's title, because it tells them what the web page is about. Therefore you should place your most important keywords between the <TITLE> tags. For best results, it is advised that you keep it within 5 - 10 keywords and to-the-point. If you make the title too long, you risk that part of the title will be cut out by some search engines and won't get displayed. Also, since search engines return the title as the search results, your HTML title should be both descriptive and attractive because that's what makes visitors click through your website. For example, the following title describes well the web site, and therefore is a good choice: <TITLE>Web Submission - search engine optimization SEO and submission software</TITLE> 2. Meta Tags Meta tags are special HTML tags, usually within the <HEAD>...</HEAD> portion of the web page. Unlike normal HTML tags, Meta tags do not affect how the page is displayed. Meta tags allow you to control how search engines catalog your web site. Not all search engines make use of these tags, but using them will definitely improve your position in those that do. The most commonly used Meta tags are Description and Keywords tags. Meta Description Tag: The <META> description tag lets you specify a short summary about your web site. Most search engines use the Description Tag for their summary description when they display your website in the search results. This is also very important from the visitor point of view as it tells the searcher whether your website is relevant to his search and worth the visit. Therefore this tag should clearly describe what one can find on your web site. Here's an example: <meta name="description" content="Web Submission - Ultimate All in One Search Engine Submission & SEO Search Engine Optimization Software to promote your web site to all major search engines"> The actual size used is not as important as the message it conveys, but do not exceed the limit - the recommended summary size is between 200 - 250 characters maximum. Meta keyword tag: The keywords tag is used by search engines to help them in indexing your website. This is important because search engines use this information to determine what queries your website will come up under. The basic HTML format of the Meta keyword tag is: <meta name="keywords" content="keyword1,keyword2,keyword3,keyword4,..."> OR <meta name="keywords" content="keyword1 keyword2 keyword3 keyword4 ..."> Sample: <meta name="keywords" content="dog food, dogs, pet food, pets, dry, wet, canned dog food, pet supplies"> (Notice that it includes both words and phrases) Note that inclusion of commas is not necessary so they can be removed if you are hovering around the limit. Including them however, makes the tag much more readable. The common abuse of the Meta keyword tag was -- and still is -- the repetition of words in the tag, which is called spamming. Never insert the same word twice in a row in this tag, even if you're using different variations. You can use the same word in different phrases, but avoid repeating keywords in this tag. The recommended length limit is between 10 to 20 keywords. 3. Body Text When creating your keyword-rich web page copy keep in mind following 2 concepts: Keyword Prominence and Keyword Proximity. Keyword Prominence: Keyword prominence refers to how keywords are close to the "beginning" of the web page. The closer the keywords are the better. The reason behind this is that Google for example, usually picks up description from the first 2 paragraphs. If the first paragraph is keyword-rich, your web page has a good chance to rank well for these terms. Keyword Proximity: Keyword proximity refers to the closeness between your keywords on the page. In general, the closer the keywords are to each other, the better. The following is a good sample of a well optimized phrase for the keyword London flower shop: Red Rose Ltd is the leading London flower shop. As oppose to: Red Rose Ltd is the leading flower shop for the London area. Note: Keyword Density Keyword Density used to get (or may be still gets) lots of undeserved attention. It tells you many times a keyword is used on a web page in relation to the rest of words on the same page. There should not be such a fuss around keyword density as it does not really help to optimize your web page. And that's because is simply does not take in account both concepts above: it does not tell you where the keywords are located and what the distance is between them. When creating your webpage copy writing don't forget who you wish to impress - search engines or your potential customers? Keep in mind that it does not matter how well your web page is optimized or how well your website ranks. If you fail to impress your visitor, you lose the sale and you make no profit. And profit is what matters on the Net. Ivana Giardi is Marketing Director for Apex Reach division of Apex Pacific , a complete Internet marketing solutions provider. 10 Steps for Webmasters to Create a Spider Friendly Website
10 Steps for Webmasters to Create a Spider Friendly Website The 10 steps below will ensure that GoogleBot and other search engine spiders are able to crawl your site with little effort when they visit you. The search engines job is to index as many pages as possible from the web and they do this by trying to find the most efficient pages to process so that they may move on to the next. You can ensure their favor by helping them to index your site efficiently and effectively. Proper Nesting Many spiders are built to parse the HTML on your page. One of the things that may confuse a parser or cause it to work harder is improper nesting of HTML elements on a page. These are tags that are opened and closed out of order such as abc...cab versus abc...cba In order to have the spiders crawl through your page flawlessly, visit validator.w3c.org and use their HTML validator specifically looking for error messages that say "end tag for '####' omitted, but its declaration does not permit this" or "end tag for element '####' which is not open". These are errors that signify improper nesting and while they may allow some spiders to visit your website, your site will lose valuable SEO points because the spiders cannot visit your site as efficiently as it can visit other sites. Remember, search engines need to spider many pages quickly to stay in their game. Use of Frames This is a spider killer if there ever was one. You simply cannot link to a specific page in a framed site with any effectiveness. If you link directly to a page within the frame, the rest of the framed page disappears. If you link to the main frames page, there is no way to link to the subpages and only your homepage(s) will show. I-Frames offer a slight advantage as they are contained within a page that has it's own URL, but many times the content within an I-Frame is inaccessible. Don't place your navigation or main content into an I-Frame. SessionID's in Your URLs These lead to a seemingly unending list of variations on each URL that have no real effect on the page. Every time a spider visits your pages, they get more and more versions of the same 'other' pages, but with different URLs each time because of the sessionID. If you want the spiders to feel at home on your site, then the barbed-wire fields of sessionIDs are not going to work. One way around this is to use a sitemap creation service like AutoMapIt.com that allow you to 'ignore' certain URL keys like the sessionID or keys used for sorting lists. This way, they have at least one link to each page that doesn't include a sessionID. Even if they are turned off at your sitemap, when the spiders visit, they will find the IDs again. SessionID's may show up in otherwise friendly URLs. If your users have to log-in on your site or you use some types of tracking software, sessionID's are what helps your site to keep visitors logged in. They are usually stored in cookies through your browser and don't normally show up in your URL. If cookies are not available (like on most spiders), the sessionID then gets passed through the URL. You may want to turn cookies off in your browser and surf your site... do the sessionIDs show up? Search-Friendly URLs This goes beyond the sessionID's in the URL and appeal more to the actual URLs being used. According to Google Webmaster Guidelines, "It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few". Apache makes this easy through mod_rewrite and Windows servers offer Isapi-Rewrite to accomplish turning 'ugly' URLs into 'static' URLs. You should NEVER use id= in your URLs as Google does not to spider those pages. Change it to cid= or lmnopid=, but if you use id=, your pages are already doomed from the start. Proper Meta Tags Despite their value decreasing, and a lot of talk about them being of no use now, meta tags are anything but dead. Google uses your meta-description as the description on their SERPs. Yahoo uses description tags and prefer sites that have them. Many other search engines use the meta keywords as well. Even if they only verify that it is present and correct, many search engines won't touch your site without them. The meta robots tag is unnecessary unless it's restricting access to a page. It is the spiders natural state to index a page and follow all links from it. Using it to 'allow' spiders only increases your code:text ratio needlessly and may hurt your potential rank by a slight amount. Javascript/Images/Flash Use these sparingly to accentuate your site for users. You should never rely on these for critical website functions like navigation, content, or other vital page info. Even though 98% of the internet uses javascript, turning it off along with images and multimedia in your browser (or using the Lynx browser) will allow you to visit your site as the search engines do. This 20 minute task will alert you to potential problems that your site will have when the search engines visit. Links Most everyone knows that links into your website bring spiders to visit and help your rank, but the links within your site to itself and other websites are also very important. Google limits you to 100 links per page and most other engines are rather close (but perhaps more generous) and allow you 150 or so links per page. This is total for links within your site and links to other sites. Keyword stats and code:text ratio Your goal should be to have the most content possible (human readable) while limiting the amount of code used to deliver this. Keywords should be limited to a few select phrases and possibly some variations on those phrases. If you are at all considering any meaningful SEO work on your site, you should really invest your first few dollars into finding the right keywords. There are many free keyword tools such as Wordtracker.com to at least give you a start, but the few extra dollars for the upgrades are usually well worth it if you want to target the correct markets and find terms that you weren't expecting. Standards Compliant/Accessible This builds on the Validator tool used earlier from W3C. By making your website completely standards compliant, you remove any possible errors in the code that may hang-up a spider. While complete compliance is not as critical as parsing errors from open tags and truly broken code, it certainly helps to ease the process of being spidered. Branding The links within your site should all use the same www. or non-www. branding. Many search engines see those variants as two separate sites and Google will even apply different PR to a page based on www or non-www. This can be further enforced by changing your htaccess file to automatically switch versions if the other is visited. If you visit the non-www version of my sites, it will automatically be forwarded to the www version. This is not a critical step, but it is a major enhancement for not a lot of work involved. Why split your value in half when you can focus it like a laser? Just be sure to request links, add your link to profiles, and link to your own site from within your site using one version or the other, but not both. Following these ten steps will help to ensure that your site is well-received by ALL of the search engine spiders and will not limit you to the bare essentials for only one spider (or bad ranking with all of the spiders equally). Let's face it, if you have ever tried to get better rank on a search engine, you know that any break you can get will help. These steps should be performed at the creation of your web site and continue throughout it's life-cycle to ensure that the spiders are always able to visit your site with as little effort on their part as possible. > More about SEO Posted by Shawn Snarski. Search Engine Optimization Seo Tips
Search Engine Optimaization - Seo Tips Search Engine Optimization uses a combination of techniques, tools, and technical know-how to get results .Search engine optimization (SEO) is a set of methodologies aimed at improving the visibility of a website in search engine listing. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) involves the careful optimization of corporate web sites to effectively increase their visibility in the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Alta-Vista,and many others. The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. * Meta Tags * Navigational links * Rich Content Meta Tags: Meta Tags are very important for your website's visibility. Many search engines read them from your site when you submit it to them .Major meta tags that you can use: <META name="resource-type" content="document"> The only resource type that is currently in use is "document" This is the only tag that you need to put in for indexing purposes. <META name="description" content="a description of your page"> Depending on the search engine, this will be displayed along with the title of your page in an index. "content" could be a word, sentence or even paragraph to describe your page. Keep this reasonably short, concise and to the point. <META name="keywords" content="a, list, of, keywords"> Choose whatever keywords you think are appropriate, seperated by commas. Navigational links: at the right or at the bottom, but not on the left, of the page. When the search engines "read" your site, they read from the top left to the bottom right. Search engines place an emphasis on the first 100 words or text on the site. You do not want these words to be navigational links or Javascript. Ideally, you want to have your heading tags with your keywords in the beginning of your page. This being said, placing your links/JavaScript on the right or bottom of your page ensures the search engine spiders get to the text first, giving more weight to what's important on your page. Rich Content: The more content you have on your site the more likely someone is to find what they're looking for when they get there. Keep your site very content rich. Have a lot of pages.Update the site even twice a day if you have the time. Updating your site does not mean that you copy paste content from other sites. That will only push your rankings further down. Don't have any duplicate content. At the same time ,dont spam multiple content across the same website. When a search engine views or reviews a website, which they do at least every few months, it looks for specific characteristics found in the content of website landing pages. Webmaster Tutorial - Installing PHP on IIS 5.1 (Windows XP Pro)
Webmaster Tutorial - Prerequisite: IIS (web server) installed. (www.php.net/downloads.php). The version available at the time of this publishing is 5.1.4. The first step is to extract all of the files from the downloaded zip file into C:\PHP (create the folder if it doesn't already exist). You may choose a different location, although it is not recommended. The path must NOT have spaces, for example, you cannot use C:\Program Files\PHP. Some web servers may not be able to handle the path name and will fault. PHP 5 includes a CGI executable, a CLI executable as well as the server modules. The DLLs needed for these executables can be found in the root of the PHP folder (C:\PHP). php5ts.dll needs to be available to the web server. To do this, you have 3 options: 1. Copy php5ts.dll to the web server's directory (C:\inetpub\wwwroot). 2. Copy php5ts.dll to the Windows system directory (C:\windows\system32). 3. Add the PHP directory path to the environment variables PATH. We will go with option 3, because we would like to keep all of our PHP install files in the same location, for easier cleanup later, if needed. Let's proceed... Instructions on how to put C:\php in env variables PATH. First we want to open System Properties. There are two ways to get to System Properties. Either way will work. 1. Right-Click on My computer and choose "properties". 2. Go to Control Panel, and select "System". Once here, we want to select the Advanced tab. In the Advanced tab, click the "Environment Variables" button. There are two sections in the Environment Variables window, User Variable and System Variables. We will be using System Variables. Scroll down in System Variables until you find the variable PATH. Highlight that line and the select Edit below the System Variables window. We will only be adding to the Variable Value. BE CAREFUL HERE. You do not want to delete anything on this line. Simply find the end of the line and add a semi-colon ( ; ) if there is not one already. After the semi-colon, type: C:\PHP and then hit OK. Now click OK on the Environment Variables window. Finally click OK on the System Properties window and we are done with this part. Now we must restart the computer to make the Environment Variables changes come into play. We cannot simply log off and log on, you must restart. The next step is to set up a config file for PHP, php.ini. In C:\PHP you will find two files named php.ini-dist and php.ini-recommended. We will use php.ini-recommended for this install, and all you need to do is rename it from php.ini-recommended to php.ini. 1. doc_root = C:\inetpub\wwwroot 2. cgi.force_redirect = 0 Now PHP is installed, lets move on to preparing our IIS to use PHP.
Configure IIS to use PHP. 1. Open IIS 2. Under Home Directory: Set "Execute Permissions" to "Scripts Only" 3. Click on configuration.. a. Click Add b. Set "executable" to C:\PHP\php5isapi.dll c. Set "extension" to .php (don't forget to include the . ) d. Click OK e. Click Apply, then OK. Under ISAPI Filters a. Click "Add" b. Set Filter Name to PHP c. Set Executable to C:\PHP\php5isapi.dll d. Click OK. e. Click Apply, then OK. Restart the Web Server Now we want to test PHP on our system. To do this, we will create a file called phpinfo.php and it will be used to display all of the PHP info from our system in our web browser. 1. Open Notepad and type: <?php echo phpinfo(); ?> 2. Save the file as phpinfo.php and select the file type 'All Files' (Important: do not save the file as .txt, as it will not work). 3. Move the file into C:\inetpub\wwwroot 4. Open your web browser and type: http://localhost/phpnfo.php 5. Your browser should display a lot of PHP information. Congratulations! PHP is now installed and configured on your machine. You can now start building dynamic web pages. Building Bilingual Websites
Building Bilingual Websites A bilingual website will increase profits over time. Building a quality website can take time and should be written in the language intended, not simply translated. But how can a company truly build a website that incorporates another language? Building a quality bilingual website can take some time in order to ensure quality. When building an English-Spanish website, for example, it is important to create pages for both languages at the same time. When a website is created for one language and then translated into another language, some of the meaning is lost since languages have different words for different meanings. Straight translation will destroy some of the website's integrity and it will appear to have been translated as an afterthought. Since honesty and reliability are the measuring sticks of an informative website, proper translation is key to keeping traffic coming to the site. The job of writing code for a foreign language usually falls into the hands of a translation services or localization provider who hires translators who are also experienced computer-code writers. Before beginning a bilingual website, give the translation services provider enough information about the audience they will be writing for. Cultural information, which includes common greetings, how dates are written, how outlines are formed, color scheme, alphabet, currency, and anything else that will appear on the screen, needs to be specialized for Spanish translation or other language translation. This is called forming a 'locale'. The translator will need to know which computer phrases, such as 'modem', or 'monitor' are universal enough that they can be used within another language. After familiarizing themselves with 'locale', the website creators can begin to write. English to Spanish translation can be a lengthy process, but when done correctly, meanings are transferred flawlessly. To the person who is requesting a website to appear in a certain language, forms, email, and other components of the site will have to appear in the same language. Uniformity is another way people judge a website's credibility. It is best to build a database of repetitive code that can be used whenever creating a bilingual website. This will make the translation process much easier and will keep mistakes to a minimum. Slang language in any country continues to change rapidly. If the website is geared toward young people, it is important to also keep the language current. A database can help ease confusion and also save time. Bilingual websites are becoming more popular as companies continue to sell their products online in many different countries. By creating websites that are not merely translated from English, but created using other languages, people will buy products, ask for services, and return to the site again and again. That is, if you do your translation and localization right the first time. Peter LeSar makes it easy to buy human translation services of the highest quality and at the best price. Ban Proofing Your Website
Ban Proofing Your Website It may come as a surprise to to discover that some of the major search engines are actively banning sites and removing them from their indexes. That of course could be catastrophic for your online activities. Why ban sites? When you think about it, it's obvious. With so many web pages connected to the Internet the search engines are having an ever harder time keeping up with them all. Because the expansion of the Internet seems likely only to accelerate they may have to be ever more selective about what they index. By rubbish, I don't mean that the design is awful, or that it looks like it was done by a five year old. Rubbish is more that it has nothing to offer. There has been a proliferation of junk sites created purely to make advertising revenue from pay per click adsverts incorporated in their pages. If you have spent any time at all on the Internet you will doubtless have come across sites which have no real content at all but are plastered with banner adverts, AdWords advertising and nothing else. With search engine technology becoming ever more sophisticated it's becoming ever more possible to identify such sites by means of automated processes. My personal expectation is that page rank will play an ever increasing role in what remains indexed and I do wonder how new or small sites of limited general interest will fare incoming years. Hopefully the search engines will remain true to the spirit of the Internet and continue to let them flourish. So, how do you ban proof your site? Well to be honest you can't totally but you can minimise the chances by making sure that your site behaves normally. Grow your site organically a few pages at a time. A five thousand page website appearing from nowhere is likely to trip a few automated alarms which may lead to unwanted scrutiny. The most important thing that you can do to remain indexed is to make sure that it has actual content written by a human being and that it has something unique and useful to offer it's visitors. Ten Indications That Point To A Rogue SEO Company
Ten Indications that Point to Search engine optimizers are everywhere, it is a booming business. SEOs as they are known help websites in numerous ways. They handle writing of copy, site architecture, as well as submission to directories. With rampant development of the web and its related services it is becoming harder and harder to separate the "wheat from the chaff." Sadly along with genuine SEOs are present unethical or rogue SEOs who play the game by unfair rules. You need to be savy and think on your feet and learn to recognize a rotten apple quickly. Be wary of SEOs who send you e-mails unsolicited and make statements about getting you no 1 rank on large and popular sites like Google, Yahoo, and so on. 1. If a SEO beats around the bush and does not lay cards on the table then the company is suspect. An established SEO will have nothing to hide and will utilize only ethical practices. So, any SEO should explain with clarity what they will do for you. Never get taken in by big statements like "we have special arrangements with x,y, z so your site will get priority listings." Watch out for misrepresentation of the SEOs success rate and false promises. 2. Unethical SEOs present what look like impressive lists of search engines that your site will appear on. Often many of the search engines listed will be dead sites. If the SEO was a professional outfit they would make efforts to ensure that the information they provide will withstand scrutiny. 3. There are companies that are in actuality just telemarketing business that will hound you, take an advance, and fail to deliver whatever they promise. Beware of companies that plague you on the e-mail and phone. 4. SEOs often abuse search engines. They buy links with high page ranks and link the site to yours. Often the link site is not of quality or good content. Practices like this can get your site banned by search engines, damaging your reputation. You need to check the references provided by the SEO and do a market survey to establish their credentials and business standing. 5. SEOs who work in the dark manipulate key word frequency by producing content that is nonsensical with the correct frequency of key words. This is done to ensure that your ranking improves. Avoid this and determine exactly how the SEO is going to help you. 6. Any SEO that promotes free-for-all links or popularity schemes is to be avoided. These are just meaningless exercises and embellishments of a grandiose scheme. This will never improve your ranking or lead anywhere. 7. Beware of SEOs that use shadow domains to gather hits. SEOs create and own such domains to fulfill false promises. 8. Tools like spyware and scumware are used to generate traffic. Generating fake traffic is not going to do your website any good in the long run. No business can sustain on the creation of a mirage. 9. SEOs club search engine results with pay-per-click and pay-per-inclusion and even place you in the advertising section than in the search engine itself. Be clear what they are charging you for and what the SEOs plan of action will be. 10. Unscrupulous SEOs even urge customers to pay for the ability to type keywords directly into the browsers address bar. Be cautious and never take a SEOs claim at face value. Be wise and careful. Do your homework thoroughly and check the credentials of any SEO you are considering. If you are suspicious check them out. If you feel you are deceived by a SEO complaint at http://www.ftc.gov/ .
